Mosquito nets and bicycles     12 March, 2007, 06:05 pm
The need for mosquito nets in sub-Sahara Africa continues to be acute. In order to give sufficient protection to a pastors' family, 3 nets are provided as a minimum. One is for the parents, one for the female children and one for the male children. if nets are used there is still the possibility of being bitten before going to bed, but the chances are greatly reduced. Not only does this help the health of the family, it also saves them considerable finance and time as they do not have to visit the clinics so often for treatment. Each net costs about £4

The bicycles will enable pastors to cover their areas of up to 100 sq km more effectively and get serve their churches better. Each pastor agrees to pay 10% of the cost of the bicycle. This encourages ownership and care of the bikes.

As churches multiply, the need for bicycles in rural areas grows. In February 2007 newly ordained pastors in the Anglican Diocese of Gitega, Burundi were helped to buy bicycles. Baptist pastors in Iringa and Mbeya, Tanzania were also helped with the purchase of their bicycles. Safari Books and Sunday school picture sets     2 March, 2007, 10:35 pm
The series of Safari poster sets to help with teaching Sunday school or equivalent in East Africa has been expanded so that there are now 4 different A4 sets - The Lost Son - Zacchaeus - The Wedding - The Wise Men - and 7 A3 sets - Feeding 5,000 - The Lost Sheep - The Sower - Good Samaritan - Learning to Pray - Birth of John the Baptist - Jesus the Healer. In November 2006, thanks to the generosity of the Church of the Ascension, Balham Hill, London, the set of pictures portraying the Baptism and Temptations of Jesus were produced.

The pictures have been drawn by Peter Kasamba of Kampala and are in full colour, helping children to relate to the stories in their culture. Each set has 7 individual pictures.

Swahili commentaries     2 March, 2007, 10:29 pm
The New testament commentaries written directly in Swahili by Sister Dorothy have now all been printed. Copies are available from APF in UK or from Scripture Union or ACTS (NIST bookshop)in Kenya or from Scripture Union, Dar es Salaam and Imbaseni, Arusha,- Soma Biblia, Dar and Iringa,in Tanzania. Free sets are being made available to all Bible colleges and schools in Kenya and Tanzania who request them. These commentaries are geared for the rural pastor who has very litle to help him with his own Bible study and sermon preparation. They will also help the many catechists and evangelists who have never had the chance to study.
